A lovely new ( 2017) cafe arrived in Oakwood this year. With friendly service and polenta chips. Plenty of share boards and relaxed chatter makes it a cosy stop off on rainy days. I had my “none hen party – hen party” here, sipping bellinis with my two besties as well as a post registry office luncheon with the extended tribe. Super chilled, consistently yum food.
Lap of the Lake
An all time favourite thing of mine to do is make a lap of Waterloo lake at Roundhay Park. It always blows the cobwebs away and reinvigorates the soul to be amongst nature. It’s stunning. There’s always things to see – swan babies, wagging dog tails, ducks choking on Warburtons, kids dropping ice cream, an overweight pug licking up the mess – it’s just lovely. I dog walk there weekly come rain, hale or shine.
An accessible, entirely volunteer run cinema in the ‘burbs, showing some pretty recent films – think La La Land and Lion. A proper cinema experience hosted within the community, this is a ‘profesh’ scenario, complete with big screen and popcorn, it makes it a treat to stay local.
Oakwood cinema, hosts monthly screenings.
You probably know this already, but there’s a stash of specialist gardens just opposite the Roundhay Fox pub on Mansion Lane? As you approach you will see the Monet Garden with it’s sweeping green arches and colourful flowerbeds flanking each side of the path. There’s a mini Alhambra Garden with rustic tiled floor and Moorish fountains. There’s also a series of four four medal-winning RHS Chelsea Flower Show ornamental gardens managed by some of the best horticulturalists in the city. All totally free to look around.
There’s also a less well known garden known as The Jungle Garden a private garden that opens it’s doors a few times a year for charity donations and can occasionally be viewed by appointment and prior arrangement with the lovely owner. You should check it out it’s insane.
Farmers Market & Seed Swap
Every month around Oakwood clock, folks gather to buy fresh Yorkshire produce and catch up as a community, it’s lovely.
Another cute cafe offering in Oakwood. Love the Hay Design interior and hipster barristas. It’s definitely one to visit, cub-free, with my Mac or journal to hug a mug of North Star coffee, Insta my eggs and feel like a proper creative cliche!
