This trip was my all time dream holiday and I was lucky enough to go on safari to Shamwari game reserve. 75km from Port Elizabeth, South Africa we drove through the entrance gates and down a dirt track for a few kilometres, then we were met at a check point by rangers with radios and guns where they opened the main gates and we drove to the main lodge.
Two nights spent at the Black Eagle lodge was a fabulous experience. A beautiful lodge with huge ceilings, a hot tub bath in the centre of the space, four poster bed and a glass window frontage opening on to an infinity pool and the most beautiful crag.
We saw both black and white rhinos, a pride of sleepy lions, Buffalo and elephants we were just missing an elusive leopard from the big five. Our ranger Westley was incredible pointing out bubbles in the river and watching hippos emerge, we saw Caracal cats, black backed jackals, the list goes on.
My hi-light was seeing a pride of lions in the wild guarding a kill as well as a visit to the Born Free Foundation to meet Sinbad the lion and the fantastic work of the foundation who I have supported ever having watched the “Born Free” movie as a child.
Africa definitely stole a piece of my heart.
